In my last blog, I discussed the devastating impact of acne on mental health and discussed how knowing your skin and creating a simple skincare routine is essential to let your skin heal. In this detailed blog post, discover how to identify your skin type, pinpoint specific acne issues, and create a personalized skincare routine to promote healing.

Different Skin Type

Properly identifying your skin type is crucial for effectively treating any skin concerns. Each skin type has unique needs, and understanding how much oil your skin produces is a key factor in determining your type. Factors such as age, hormones, and environment can impact the amount of sebum (oil) your skin produces. By understanding your skin type, you can select skincare products that work for your skin and not against it.

Five Main Skin Types:

  1. Normal skin: balanced oil and moisture content in the face
    1. Small pores and a smooth texture
    2. Neither too dry nor too oily
    3. Not prone to breakout or flakiness
  2. Oily skin: produces too much oil
    1. Skin appears shiny and greasy
    2. Larger pores
    3. More prone to blemishes, blackheads, and whiteheads
  3. Dry skin: lack of oil and moisture content in the face because it produces less natural oils than other skin types
    1. Skin feels tight, itchy, and flaky
    2. Skin appears dull and dry
    3. Dehydrated
  4. Combination skin: a combination of oily and dry areas in the face
    1. Oily T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin)
    2. Dry or normal cheeks
    3. Can change depending on the different seasons as well as hormonal changes and stress
  5. Sensitive skin: easily irritated skin that reacts to certain products or environmental factors
    1. Possible to have oily sensitive skin, dry sensitive skin, or normal sensitive skin.
    2. Skin appears red
    3. Skin feels like it is itchy, burning, or dry
    4. Skincare ingredients, diet, and other factors might trigger the skin to react

How to Identify Your Skin Type at Home:

The Bare-Faced Method: This method involves cleaning your face with a gentle cleanser and not applying any products or makeup for a day. Then, you observe your skin throughout the day and take note of the oiliness, pores, sensitivity, breakouts, and texture.

  • If your skin appears shiny, you might have oily skin.
  • If your skin feels tight and dry, you might have dry skin.
  • If your skin is oily only in your T-zone, you might have combination skin.
  • If your skin feels hydrated and comfortable, and not oily, you might have normal skin.

Blotting Sheet Method: Press a clean blotting paper on different areas of your face like the forehead, nose, and chin. After about 30 minutes, hold the sheet up to a light to see how much oil was absorbed.

  • If there is a lot of oil in the paper, your skin type might be oily
  • If there is little to no oil in the paper, your skin type might be dry
  • If there is oil on your T-zone only, your skin type might be combination
  • If there is very little oil on every area of your face, your skin type might be normal

Combining this method with the bare-faced method might give you even more precise results.

How To Care For Your Skin Type

Congratulations on identifying your skin type! Knowing your skin type is the first step in developing a skincare routine that will keep your skin happy and healthy. But now that you know your skin type, how do you take care of it?

Normal Skin Type

If you have normal skin, you are blessed with a skin type that is not too oily or too dry and doesn’t experience a lot of breakouts or sensitivity. However, even normal skin can benefit from a consistent skincare routine. A simple routine that includes a gentle cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen will help maintain your skin’s natural balance, keep it looking healthy and protect it from sun damage.

Here are a few key steps to include in your oily skin routine:

  • First, start with a gentle cleanser that removes dirt and impurities without stripping your skin of its natural oils. This will help to keep your skin clean and refreshed.
  • Next, moisturizer is important for all skin types, including normal skin, to keep it hydrated and prevent dryness. Choose a moisturizer that is lightweight and absorbs quickly, to keep your skin feeling comfortable without clogging your pores.
  • Lastly, sunscreen is a must-have in any skincare routine. Even if you have normal skin, it is still important to protect it from harmful UV rays, which can cause sun damage, wrinkles, and dark spots.

Oily Skin Skin Type

If you have oily skin, you know that it can be a bit of a challenge to find the right skincare products. Oily skin tends to be prone to breakouts and clogged pores, which is why it’s important to choose products that are specifically formulated to address these issues. When it comes to your skincare routine, you’ll want to focus on products that nourish and hydrate your skin, without clogging your pores or triggering breakouts.

Here are a few key steps to include in your oily skin routine:

  • Start with a gentle, oil-free cleanser that effectively removes dirt, oil, and impurities without stripping your skin of its natural oils.
  • Follow with a lightweight, oil-free, and non-pore-clogging moisturizer. This will help to hydrate your skin without adding extra oil and clogging your pores.
  • Don’t forget the sunscreen! Even if you have oily skin, it’s still important to protect it from harmful UV rays.

In addition to the above, you can also include additional products like exfoliators or masks to draw out any excess oil and impurities and clean your skin from deep within. Exfoliating will help to remove dead skin cells and unclog pores, while masks can help to draw out impurities and leave your skin feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.

Dry Skin Type

Dry skin can be a frustrating condition to deal with. It’s characterized by a lack of moisture and a hard time retaining water, which can lead to itching, flaking, and tightness. If you have dry skin, it’s important to include products that help nurture and protect your skin’s natural moisture barrier in your skincare routine.

Here are a few key steps to include in your dry skin routine:

  • Begin with a gentle cleanser specifically made for dry skin. This will help to remove dirt, impurities, and makeup without stripping your skin of its natural oils.
  • Follow with a heavy moisturizer that contains ceramides. Ceramides are lipids that help to strengthen the skin’s natural moisture barrier, which can help to keep your skin hydrated and prevent dryness.
  • Even if you have dry skin, it’s still important to protect it from harmful UV rays. Choose a hydrating sunscreen that will nourish your skin while providing sun protection.

In addition to the above, you can also include a gentle exfoliator to remove any dead skin and clean impurities. Exfoliating will help to remove dead skin cells and unclog pores, leaving your skin feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.

Combination Skin Type

Dealing with combination skin can be a bit tricky as it often presents a mix of dry and oily areas. To effectively care for your combination skin, it’s important to find a balance between addressing different issues and not over-stripping or over-moisturizing specific areas.

Here are a few key steps to include in your combination skin routine:

  • Start with a gentle cleanser that effectively removes dirt, oil, and impurities without stripping your skin of its natural oils.
  • Use a lightweight moisturizer that hydrates dry areas without clogging oily areas. This will help to balance your skin and keep it hydrated.
  • Apply sunscreen to protect your skin from sun damage.
  • You can also apply a heavier moisturizer to the areas that tend to be dry and flaky. This will help to provide extra hydration to those areas without over-moisturizing oily areas.

Sensitive Skin Type

If you have sensitive skin, it’s important to be extra cautious when it comes to your skincare routine. Sensitive skin tends to react quickly to certain ingredients and harsh chemicals, which can lead to breakouts, irritation, and redness.

Here are a few key steps to include in your sensitive skin routine:

  • Identify any skincare ingredients or diet that trigger your breakouts and avoid them.
  • Perform a patch test before applying any new product to your face. This will help you identify if your skin reacts negatively to any particular ingredients.
  • Start with a gentle cleanser that effectively removes dirt, oil, and impurities without stripping your skin of its natural oils.
  • Use a moisturizer that is appropriate for your skin type to keep your skin hydrated.
  • Use sunscreen to protect your skin from sun damage.
  • It’s best to avoid experimenting with multiple new products at once as it can make it hard to identify which ingredient is causing a negative reaction on your skin
  • Avoid using any harsh chemicals on your face as that can cause severe reactions on your skin and lead to breakouts.
  • If you feel any burning sensations, or itchiness or see any redness, immediately wash your face and wear a gentle moisturizer.

General Tips for Maintaining Healthy Skin:

  • Cleanse your skin twice a day with a gentle cleanser that is appropriate for your skin type.
  • For a thorough and effective cleansing routine, make sure to double cleanse every night if you wear makeup or sunscreen. Start by using an oil-based cleanser to remove makeup and sunscreen, then follow up with a gentle cleanser to deep clean and purify your skin.
  • Exfoliate your skin once or twice a week to remove dead skin cells and unclog pores.
  • Use a moisturizer that is appropriate for your skin type to keep your skin hydrated.
  • Protect your skin from the sun with sunscreen with at least SPF 30.
  • Get enough sleep, eat a balanced diet, and manage stress to promote overall health.
  • By following a simple routine, you can maintain the natural balance of your skin and keep it looking healthy and radiant.
  • Remember, skincare takes time to work so don’t give up hope if you don’t see any change
  • Even if you have determined your skin type, it may change over time due to various factors such as stress, hormonal changes, diet, and environment so periodically re-evaluate your skin type and adjust your skincare routine accordingly.
  • It’s important to keep in mind that achieving healthy skin takes time and patience. Don’t be discouraged if you don’t see immediate results with your skincare routine, consistency and patience are key to achieving your desired outcome.

Additional Resources

If you’re still unsure about your skin type, don’t worry! There are plenty of online resources available to help you figure it out. One popular method is to take a skincare quiz. These quizzes can be found on various websites, and they typically involve answering a series of questions about your skin’s appearance, texture, and any issues you may be experiencing. Once you complete the quiz, you’ll be provided with a recommended skin type and a skincare routine that is tailored to address your specific skin concerns.

Here are a few examples of online resources that offer skincare quizzes:

It’s important to note that these quizzes are not always 100% accurate, and it’s always a good idea to consult with a dermatologist if you have any concerns about your skin. But taking a skincare quiz can be a great starting point for figuring out your skin type and developing a skincare routine that works for you. With the right care and attention, you can keep your skin looking and feeling its best.
